Writing Positive Affirmations—5 Tips
An affirmation is a specific and often positive statement which a person makes to imply that what they want is already so. This statements work because of the way the human mind functions.
Psychological researches have proven that what a person subconsciously believes about themselves is signaled in their body language and speech patterns.
Other people easily notice that and react accordingly to the person. It is known as the Law of Attraction. Just know that what you tell yourself becomes what you expect to happen, and because your behavior will match your expectations, what you tell yourself soon becomes real.
So, you are what you think about. Your mind always affects your body. Some people endlessly worry about what might go wrong, or refuse to forgive themselves for mistakes they made in the past. This pattern of thinking often causes mental stress, which in turn can lead to chronic illnesses if left unchecked.
On the other hand, if a person constantly sees light at the end of his tunnel, by constantly reminding yourself of how good life can be, this can reduce stress and promote good health, and makes it easier for the person to see and recognize and use life’s limitless opportunities.
So changing your habitual way of thinking is sure to change your self-beliefs which will result in a happier you. Now, let me show you 5 ways to write the sort of positive affirmations that can affect your inner being:
Write In The Present Tense: Affirmations tend to be more effective when they are written in the present tense. This is because the mind records only what is put in it. So it’s better to begin with “I now have what it takes to…” rather than “I am going to have what it takes…”
The latter creates a situation whereby you are prepared to wait indefinitely to have what is affirmed. While the former portrays you as having already achieved it, thus conditioning the mind to act.
It Should Be About You: Your affirmations should contain the words “I” or “Me.” Do not make an affirmation that requires the contribution or efforts of others to achieve. In fact, keep your affirmations hidden from others, for two reasons: 1, they may see it as too self-centered, and 2, they may even ridicule you when you don’t get right what you are affirming.
Let’s say you’re working on your temper and have affirmed “I am calm in the face of provocation.” Then one of these days you find yourself yelling at a clearly troublesome colleague. If they’re aware of your affirmation they may well make fun of you and the affirmation, not realizing that changes don’t happen overnight. So while the work in progress continues, make your affirmations personal, and keep them to yourself.
Make it short and specific: Affirmations are easier to repeat and they have far stronger impact on the subconscious mind when they are short and uncluttered. As far as affirmations are concerned, six words are better than six lines.
Affirm only positive expectations: Please, affirm what it is you want, not what you do not want. For example, do not say: “I am never sad or depressed.” Your subconscious mind will first work out the implication of those two negative words before proceeding to what to do with them. There’s no point for that. It’s a lot better to simply affirm: “I am a happy person, and I have a positive and an optimistic outlook on life.”
Try and visualize what you affirm: To manifest what it is you desire in your affirmations, always try and visualize yourself as already having obtained the desired outcome.
Affirmations are powerful mental techniques for transforming one’s hidden beliefs in ways that can profoundly change a person’s attitudes, expectations, and behavior. The 5 tips above should guide the way you affirm your most cherished expectations.
