The 6 Qualities of a Good MLM Leader

Good Leadership qualities are important for success in both online and offline network marketing. Multi-Level Marketing after all is basically about creating a team of distributors and guiding each member of the team on ways to succeed.

To the extent that you are able to project yourself as a leader before your downline or prospects, to that same extent your network business will thrive. And vice versa.

A good leader is one who is able to teach and motivate others on how to practice success principles. In other words, he teaches subordinates how to benefit themselves. A leader is one whose personal example has won the trust and admiration of team members.

They see him as an authority in the business both because of his achievements and because of his useful ideas. Let’s now look at some of the most important qualities an MLM leader needs to display:

You Must Show Fellow Feeling: you must care how your downline members are doing in their business. You must identify with their feelings and show them how to handle frustrating situations that often arise in the business. This is very important.

Most new members would quit the moment it appears that you’re only using them to achieve your own goals. If you wholeheartedly direct and guide them on the path to success, they won’t care how much you’re making. They’ll see you as a partner in progress.

You Must Have Credible Results: you’ll be seen as a leader if you practice what you teach, AND if these teachings are producing observable results for you. In MLM more than in any other business, the phrase “if I can see it I can believe it” is the norm.

People follow leaders whose methods are proven to work, as is exemplified in the life of the leader. Really, you can only promise success to others if you’ve achieved or are achieving it yourself. You can’t give what you don’t have. Most prospects often feel like “what do you know about success when you don’t even have it?”

A Good Leader Must Add Value: what value are you adding to the life or business of your downline distributors? Leadership in network marketing is all about people following someone who shows them how to do things better—how to be better at marketing, how to use certain online tools to prospect (say YouTube or twitter), how to generate
free leads, how to convert leads to customers. Anything that helps team members or prospects on how to achieve the success they want to achieve with their business.

A Good Leader Must Keep Learning: you must continue to develop yourself and grow as a leader. Invest in yourself so that you’ll always have value to add to others who are following you. You might have learnt about attraction marketing as an effective way to get online leads.

Tell your prospects or members of your list exactly how they can implement the strategies of attraction marketing. Stay on top of things, and let your followers hear most tips on how to build their business first from you.

Be Unique: let there be a few things about you that your followers can’t quite get from another marketer. It could be the way you know and call everyone by their name. It could also be in the way you go beyond the call of duty to be of help when requested. Maybe it’s in the way you follow up on issues to ensure they’re resolved.

You Must Stay In Charge: Do not shirk your responsibilities as a leader. A leader is one who makes decisions and follows this up with appropriate actions. This could be challenging at times. But there’s no room for second thoughts once you’ve decided on something. Also, accept responsibility for the outcome of any actions you recommend—good or bad. You’re not supposed to be perfect.

But you must be seen to be truthful and honest. Remember too that you can’t do everything yourself. Sometimes as a leader you may need to delegate a trusted hand to take charge of some things pertaining to team members. But you must always keep an eye on how things are turning out.

Leadership is probably the single most important quality for building a thriving network marketing business. Therefore your efforts to improve in this aspect of your MLM business will bring rich rewards.

Articles and blogs are written so they could be read by online visitors. That’s the only reason they’re taken to public forums. Naturally the moment you post your new articles or blogs, you begin to expect readers, and you may well be anxious about how they would react to the message therein. That is normal.

Readers play essential roles in shaping up a blog. It often gives a blog an entirely new direction, as well as helping the blog owner to assume greater responsibility towards the content of articles posted on the blog and their quality. Indeed, many bloggers admit to being inspired in no small way by their readers.

So how do you assemble the type of reader-community that can inspire your blog posts? More importantly, how do you build a lasting relationship with the members of this community, your article and blog readers?

Start by knowing your readers: You can respectfully ask your readers to tell you a bit about themselves. It is even possible to glean some of this information by visiting your visitor (or commentators’) website.

You can also comment on their site’s layout and the topics it covers. But be sincere with your comments and posts. Empty praises can easily be seen through.

Engage your readers: Remember that your goal is to go beyond a normal blogger-reader connection. So occasionally pose questions to your readers. Ask them for their candid opinions concerning the topics you treat in your articles. Generally engage them in conversations.

That naturally suggests that you should try and respond to the comments on your blog. Maybe not all of them. But respond to as many as you reasonably can. You sure like it when other bloggers respond to your comments. So it goes.

But ensure your response is not a mere “thank you”. If they’ve expressed their opinion about something you wrote, then they’ve started a conversation. Carry on with that the best you can.

Welcome healthy criticism: Indeed invite readers to critique some of your posts. If that’s too hard for you, at least do not react too strongly when people disagree with some of your posts.

They too have a right of opinion, just like you. And it’s not possible for everybody to agree with you all the time. Constructive criticism can actually help refine your posts and comments.

Inspire your readers: Write on topics that people want to read about. There’s no hard-and-fast rule here. But what is more important is how you treat the topic. Write about what inspires you. And write excitedly about them. Motivate your readers with your style of conversation.

Show your human angle: You are a human after all. So don’t be afraid to appear natural. Admit that you can’t possibly know all there is to know about any topic. It’s also a sign of humility when you ask for readers’ opinions or advice. Are you funny? Then occasionally inject some humor into your articles as well as your comments on other people’s blogs.

Acknowledge your readers: You do this by talking about your readers in your posts. You can also link to their websites. Promote their sites for free, and invite your loyal readers to other regular visitors.

Contribute to their own discussions; a blog is supposed to link a network of people after all. And the truth is that the larger your blog community, the more popular your blog will become.

Just bear in mind that the benefits of all the above steps will not become obvious immediately. Initiating a contact is easy. But building a lasting relationship takes effort, ongoing effort on both sides. It won’t happen overnight. But it won’t take decades, either.

Network Marketing—Don’t Chase Family and Friends!

MLM should not be about chasing your family and friends period. Let’s start by stating what is (or what ought to be) obvious: friends and family members are by far the hardest people to recruit in network marketing.

And the newer you are in the MLM business, the harder it becomes to recruit this category of prospects. Consider this: the moment you try to entice a family member or a friend to join your business, the most natural question you get is “how much money are YOU making in the business anyway?”

If you are just starting out in your MLM business, there’s no easy answer to that question. If you admit you not making money in it, then how credible is the business if you are not even making the mega bucks you are promising others?

And were you to cite your rich upline person who’s making lots of money, that only makes you a running boy (or girl), merely working to enrich someone else. How about lying or dodging the question? Don’t even consider lying.

The truth will become obvious soon enough. And a shattered reputation is nearly impossible to rebuild. Nor can you totally dodge the question—people can see through half truths.

There is a second reason why it is often difficult to recruit family and friends. Let’s just say you are enticing them with earning potentials.

Let’s say you are telling them what benefits they’ll derive from using the products you are marketing, say weight loss or multivitamin products. And indeed your products have a track record of producing great results.

Most outsiders will focus on the product’s track record and may want to patronize you based on that. But not your friends and family. These may have known you to be someone who shows little interest in physical fitness and healthy eating.

So whatever you say now may easily be discounted as marketing gimmicks. In a way, you lack credibility in their eyes. Online prospects will consider your message on its own merits.

The third, and perhaps the strongest reason why chasing family members and friends will not build you a strong network is that your business soon reaches a point where it could not grow any larger.

Rumors have it that that was the cause of David Wood’s initial failure in network marketing. He was too focused on his “warm market.” Even when he changed companies, it soon turned out that members of the “new” team comprised all the people he had recruited into his prior company.

So making a list of friends and family members and trying to market to these ones is both tiresome and a dead-end approach to network marketing. There’s a better way.

We hinted earlier that it’s better to begin by pitching the benefits of the products you’re marketing than the financial incentives. What happens is that as people (indeed including family members) begin to see the benefits of the products, and that could move them to want to become affiliates.

An African proverb says that a good product markets itself. In the case of a weight loss product for example, by the time you drop 30 pounds and begin to look several years younger, people are bound to ask what you are using. You will have gained credibility in your business. And the money follows soon after that!

Finally, generate your leads online. There is no end to the amount of prospects you can generate and market to on the internet. There are also many different methods that you can use to generate leads for your business through the net.

Bottom line is, get your leads online. Don’t waste more time trying to sign up friends and families than they are worth. Make your money elsewhere.

If in the end your success persuades them to join you, good. If not, no problem. You have the world to market to. How many are your friends and family members anyway?

Who Is Daegan Smith?—A Review

Here’s one MLM authority whose profile is hard to state in one sentence. Daegan Smith is one MLM prospecting wizard you would want to know. His prospecting and recruiting success is causing many marketers to re-examine their own marketing strategies.

Consider this: Daegan once generated some 2600 MLM leads in one day; he has sponsored more than 3000 persons into his MLM business; he routinely creates hundreds, sometimes even thousands of new prospects each day.

“The King of Never Calling a Single Lead,” as Daegan is now popularly known, was only 24 when he started out online. That was five years ago. And like most online entrepreneurs, it was the fear of the future that proved to be the catalyst that propelled him into internet marketing.

At the time, Daegan had a job alright, a FedEx delivery man. Also, remain your natural but passionate self. You don’t have to be or act like someone else to be attractive. If you trust in who you are and make it fun, be assured that like-minded people (and there are many out there!) will be attracted to you as a person and to your business.

Of course remaining yourself does not remove the need to improve in your skills and methods. Indeed, one of Daegan Smith’s most dominant attributes is that he loves learning about new things. So should you. Continually update your self. Observe what others are doing. Hire a mentor if necessary.

Daegan also believes in starting small and then scaling up. So don’t wait till you are able to start big or do things perfectly. Take action and persist in it, all the while learning and correcting your mistakes.

As the saying goes, you don’t have to be perfect before you can start, but you’ll have to start before you can become perfect.

MLM Success Doesn’t Happen Overnight!

Will MLM success happen for you? I like to win. I strive towards success in everything I do. Success is so important to me that I’m usually prepared to do everything it takes and wait as long as it takes to attain it.

I’m sure success means that much to you as well; that’s perhaps the only reason you want to continue reading this piece. Good. That means we are on the same page. If not, then read and become wise!

There is no doubt in my mind that network marketing is the quickest and easiest way to achieve financial freedom today. But even as I wrote that last line, I was a bit uncomfortable with my choice of words—QUICKEST and EASIEST. Because I know a lot of people are going to interpret those words to mean “next week” or “in a month.”

When we say that MLM is an easier and quicker route to financial success, we’re only saying in comparison with other businesses which will take a minimum of 7 to 10 years to build you real wealth, if things go well.

It’s important to spell these things out because there is this totally witless notion that seems to have persisted in MLM, namely: all you need do is just hop in, and in a year you’ll be rich. Don’t believe any of that even for a minute. Success and financial freedom doesn’t happen overnight in MLM.

If you are ever going to succeed in this business, you’re going to work and WAIT for it. Indeed, there is no substitute for PERSISTENT hard work and dedication in this business. Don’t ever think you’ll succeed in MLM if the only time you work on it is when there’s nothing else to do. It’ll never work out.

But network marketing or MLM is not inherently difficult to implement. The problem is that so many people come into this business with the belief that they won’t need to do anything at all to prosper—and prosper fast! I don’t believe that.

And I don’t teach any of that to those I recruit into my MLM business. I tell them right from when I’m prospecting them that success has rules. To succeed, a person needs to consistently follow a success plan.

Part of this plan involves committing the necessary resources that financial success requires. The most important success ingredients in network marketing are knowledge, persistent hard work, patience, training, and money.

Yes money!

I know that last item may go contrary to what you’ve often heard concerning MLM. But don’t be deceived; it takes money to make money. You surely need money to join your network opportunity; make monthly product purchases; engage in some form of marketing so as to generate leads; follow up on leads.

Yes, in MLM the start-up capital requirements are relatively small—say $200-$400 monthly. But a failure to commit even that little sum into the activities mentioned above may keep your business grounded.

Meanwhile, even after starting right, there is still a minimum period it’s going to take you to start seeing your first commission checks. For most new marketers, this won’t happen sooner than 6 months. Part of the reason is this: in network marketing, most of what makes you money comes from the efforts of your downlines. Now a rich downline is not built overnight.

It’s going to take time and effort on your part. Also, your sales skills will continue to improve with every sale you make (or even fail to make!). This won’t happen in one week either. Hasn’t it been said that ‘practice makes perfect’? I can go on and on.

The point is, no worthwhile achievement is ever made without real efforts. MLM has all the potentials to give you all the financial freedom you desire. But it won’t happen overnight.

Success takes time and right actions. Continuous learning, fine-tuning of your strategies, as well as consistent application of lessons learnt are what will guarantee your financial freedom in MLM.

It’s no longer news that Robert Dean Jr., Tahiti Noni’s No. 1 distributor has left TNI. And I suppose it’s also no longer news that he has pitched tent with Mona Vie, another network marketing company.

Yes debates as to why he left continues to rage, some comparing the move to that of a ‘bird which flies off the ground only to perch on an anthill’—very similar surfaces!

But I guess what remains news is, well, Robert Dean Jr. himself. Tahiti Noni International, Mona Vie, etc, the only reason we are interested in it all is because Robert Dean is involved. Isn’t that true?

So let’s see why this guy is a living legend.

Meet this well educated, former member of U.S. Marine corps. It would seem he had always succeeded in pretty much everything he had attempted. Robert’s romance with network marketing started as far back as the mid 90s.

He had convinced himself that the only way he could achieve the level of financial wealth he wanted was to become a leader in network marketing.

It didn’t take long before he hit the $10,000 per month mark. Mere mortals would’ve rested on their bottom and just coasted along in network marketing. Not Robert.

See What Tiger Woods Did - Does This Apply To You?

It seems I see these words EVERYWHERE these days. From motivational speakers, motivational books and tapes. It seems I am finally getting the message. Even “naturals” had to practice to learn their craft.

That is dedication and that is discipline. He WORKED to make his dreams reality. He didn’t get on the course, hit a few balls and then go sit on his couch until the next event. Why should we be any different towards our business?

For me, fear of having to speak to people sometimes stops me from reaching my goals. Sometimes I have to have my self talk. This is ridiculous. Am I going to let Fear stop me from reaching my Financial Dreams. No Way!!

Every GREAT Leader did not start off a Great leader. They all had there share of mistakes and failures. We just don’t see them. We come on the back end and see the polished product. The Successful Top Producing Leader.

A Leader does not immediately start out as a leader. You have to be willing to make mistakes. But to become the leader you know you can be, you have to make a start. Put a side your fear of making mistakes.
